Laugh! Learn! Get a fresh start!
All of these things happen regularly at Gilmer Learning
Center, Inc.
Located
adjacent to the Health Department, Gilmer Learning Center
has been helping adults learn in a stress-free environment
for almost 20 years. Most adult students are working toward
a GED, but this is not true for all. From beginning readers
to students brushing up for entrance tests to local colleges
or technical schools, as well as students wanting to learn
English as a Second Language, all can find a comfortable
place to learn here. After taking an initial assessment
test, students work on customized learning plans intended to
take them to their ultimate goal.
Partnerships
are forged daily! Students self-design a schedule and attend
when they can fit school into busy lives. Volunteer tutors
are available to assist with one-to-one or small group
instruction. Ms. Billie Adams, a founding matriarch of adult
literacy in Gilmer County, recently returned as a tireless
and faithful volunteer instructor. Her many years of helping
people learn and a patient, encouraging demeanor convince
students they can achieve things they never thought they
could.
We’ve been a
participant in the Certified Literate Community Program
since 1993. As such, we were charged with reducing the rate
of undereducated and illiterate adults in Gilmer County by
50% + 1. Our ambitious goal was to raise educational levels
for 2,390 students. We’ve far surpassed that, serving 2, 880
as of June 30, 2005. More than 600 people in Gilmer County
have earned their GED since our affiliation with this state
wide initiative. The state evaluation team visited June 8,
2006. We’ll be receiving our Certified Literate Community
status at a board meeting in Atlanta on September 7th.
